景義は宝治元年（1247）から沼田を統治し、天文元年（1532）沼田域を築いた。沼田氏最後の武将・沼田氏14代に当る。天正9年3月14日、真田昌幸の計により城内へ誘導されて殺さる。昌幸は霊を供養し、法城院を建立。なお、沼田大明神と称して祭る。この像は沼田藩土岐氏の絵師、利根村大原の金子重右ヱ門が安永7年12月12に制作し、同寺に納めたもの。
沼田氏は14代334年間沼田に君臨したが像のあるのはこれと6代景久の像だけで貴重なもの。作の技巧も優れたものである。 |
